Since last year, I've been eyeing Liza Wiemer's debut YA novel, HELLO?. I mean, how could I not when these are the early praises/blurbs for it???
"Brave, beautiful, and wholly original, this story about tantalizing connections and heartbreaking relationships will haunt you, fill you with hope, and leave you smiling."
—Martina Boone, author of Compulsion
"A triumph of writing and humanity...the characters stayed with me long after I read the book."
—Huntley Fitzpatrick, author of The Boy Most Likely To, What I Thought Was True, and My Life Next Door
“In Hello?, Liza Wiemer beautifully weaves together a moving story told by authentic characters, tackling important subjects that will deeply touch the reader.”

Late one night, in a moment of deep grief, Tricia places a call to her deceased grandmother’s old phone number. She expects the disconnect notice, but is thrown when another teen— also up late and coping with his own frustrations—answers. It’s Emerson, and though they're perfect strangers, Tricia senses an unexplainable, deeper connection between them. When his phone rings, Emerson expects it to be his sometimes-overbearing girlfriend Angie, but instead ends up transfixed by Tricia’s tenderness and heartache. The two make a pact, thus setting the events of HELLO? in motion.HELLO? is the story of five small town Wisconsin teens: Tricia, who has lost her family and is trying to find her way; her over-protective boyfriend Brian, a potter; the perfectionist Emerson; his girlfriend, the insecure and unpredictable Angie; and her tough best friend Brenda, an aspiring actress and screenwriter.Told from all five viewpoints: narration (Tricia), narration (Emerson), free verse poetry (Angie), screenplay format (Brenda), narration and drawings (Brian), HELLO? offers a textured account of five lives and weaves together the stories of these teens into a compelling narrative of serendipity and a whole that is much greater than the sum of its parts.
Liza Wiemer and Spencer Hill Contemporary has arranged an incredible worldwide event! Watch the video below to learn more.
Did you watch the video? Do you know that the teens in the video are actually from Sturgeon Bay and Washington Island! I just think this campaign is brilliant! But wait, for those who did not watch the film, here is the lowdown.
Basically, take a picture of yourself (or with some friends! or if you’re shy, of something meaningful) with a sign that says "#HelloFrom" and then wherever you are. Then please post the picture on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and/or Instagram - the more the better! Make sure to use #HelloFrom so that we see it.
Please feel free to tag people. We want everyone to know about this and, hopefully, participate from all around the globe! And you'll want to tag people because you'll get extra entries in what may be the best contest EVER. Liza went all out, and 20 people are going to win amazing prizes. You want one of those 20 to be you.
Prizes include pottery, chocolate covered cherries (and I've had them and they are AMAZING), a quilted chalkboard, coffee, blank greeting cards with scenes from Washington Island, and much more!
This is an incredibly exciting event that will take place from April 14th through June 1st! We hope you'll participate and help us not only introduce HELLO? to the world, but bring us all closer together through the power of “Hello!”
