Ask Again Later
Title: Ask Again Later
Author: Liz Czukas
Publisher: Harper Teen
Date of Publication: March 11, 2014

Despite what her name might suggest, Heart has zero interest in complicated romance. So when her brilliant plan to go to prom with a group of friends is disrupted by two surprise invites, Heart knows there's only one drama-free solution: flip a coin.

Heads: The jock. He might spend all night staring at his ex or throw up in the limo, but how bad can her brother's best friend really be?

Tails: The theater geek...with a secret. What could be better than a guy who shares all Heart's interests--even if he wants to share all his feelings?

Heart's simple coin flip has somehow given her the chance to live out both dates. But where her prom night ends up might be the most surprising thing of all...

Review

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Thank you to National Book Store, Harper Teen and Edelweiss for the review copy! This in no way affected my views of the novel.

If I have to describe ASK AGAIN LATER using one word, it would be CUTE. Too cute. Super cute. Pinch-a-baby's-cheek-cute. With that said and with the word 'cute' the only flashing sign in my brain, I'm bringing you an acrostics review!

Cute. I didn't claim to be creative and I did say this word has been floating on my mind since I started reading ASK AGAIN LATER. It's set in high school and it's about prom. What couldn't get any cuter than that? (Don't mind my hyperbole.) Our main character, Heart LaCoeur, who wanted a drama-less prom by going with her friends suddenly gets not one but TWO prom invites. One is her brother Phil's friend Troy, who got dumped by her girlfriend. The other one is her French buddy and theater techie, Ryan. Who's it gonna be? Then with a flip of a coin, Heart gets to live both heads (Troy) and tails (Ryan) proms. Cue the indecision. Cue the hair-pulling. Cue the use of THE Magic 8 Ball. Moreover, our heroine is so dense that she doesn't even know ~someone~ likes her. Gah, JUST SO CUTE. (Forgive my lack of words.)

Upbeat. If you're looking for a feel-good read, ASK AGAIN LATER is the answer to your wish. The characters are loads of fun and the situations Heart get into can rival the greatest romantic-comedies of all time. The characters are my personal idols in snark, sarcasm, wittiness and all that. This is my crowd, you guys. I've been a theater geek myself back in high school so I highly enjoyed reading this book. Moreover, even though it is upbeat and can be considered pure fluff, it still tackled some family issues without going overboard in the drama department. Phil, Heart's brother, can be such a jerk like most older brothers. Their mom left them when Heart was just a baby and so it was only them and their hardworking father ever since. It's not heavy that it will rip your heart but it can still pull the heartstrings especially to those who dig family plot arcs. ASK AGAIN LATER is the kind of book you won't mind your teen reading and the kind that anyone regardless of age will enjoy. After all, who hasn't been plagued with the enormity of THE Prom problem back in high school?

Tremendously funny. Yes, this is cheating but you guys. It felt like I've been laughing the whole time I was reading this book. First, Heart's name got me chuckling right away. Heart LaCoeur like she said sounds like a stripper name. But not only that, it means Heart Heart. I mean, come on, poor poor girl. Then her humor and everyone else's was exactly the humor I love. Heart calls one of her theater friends Schroeder, even if his name is Chase Schaefer, because he plays the piano, has blond hair and resembles Schroeder in the comics. In return, Chase calls her duodenum, pancreas, spleen or any other internal organ. My friends and I do this! I assure you that you will find yourself giggling, quite possibly cringing in embarrassment for Heart more than once but still chuckling to yourself, and howling in laughter. It's just that kind of book.

Engaging. I think ASK AGAIN LATER is the book I've read the fastest in my history. Seriously. I even took a glorious nap, did chores and all other things the day I read it but I still finished it. You just can't help but flip to the next page and gobble this one up. It's the perfect read if you want a break from all the heavy drama of issues books and all the science or world-building in your sci-fi and fantasy. It's the ultimate palate cleanser as it's one of the most fun and feel-good contemporary YA novels I've read ever.

All in all, ASK AGAIN LATER is a cute, light, breezy, sweet and hilarious contemporary YA romance novel which you should not pass out on! It is now out and I suggest you grab your copy now and have a fun day just enjoying Heart's dilemma and her getting stuck in the trunk of a car. Hee!

About Liz Czukas

Liz Czukas is a freelance writer (on sometimes sad or boring topics), and also writes books for young adults (which are rarely sad and full of kissing). Before that, she was a nurse and she still kind of misses starting IVs.

She lives outside Milwaukee, WI with her husband, son and the world’s loudest cat. She types too loud (according to her husband), spends too much time on the Internet, and can’t get enough of disaster movies. There is *always* a song stuck in her head, and she once won a hula-hoop contest.

    1. Oh, in what way did you have a tough time with the characters? Connecting to them? Their characterization? But I'm glad you still found it fun and liked it even with your issue. Thanks for checking out my review, Abbe!

  3. Very cute sounding story, but so cute sounding I am not sure that I can handle it! I don't read a ton of cutesy stories, but if I choose to they have to be REALLY STINKIN cute stories!

    1. You should read it, Jaime! I actually stay away from fluff and shallow reads these days but this one isn't as fluffy and shallow as it'd fool you. Give it a chance!
