Interview with Wes

Can you tell us something about yourself?

I've spent most of my life working as an agent for a secret government project known as The Montauk Project. They kidnapped me when I was only a child, and now I travel through time for them. Until I met Lydia, it was the only life I knew.

What are your hobbies? How do you spend your free time?

I have no hobbies - the Project owns my time, my identity, and my life. Free time doesn't exist in my world.

If you were to travel back in time, willingly, what era would you choose and why?

My time travel has never been willing. But if I was forced to choose, it might be the 1920s. Lydia and I once talked about running away to that era.

If you could alter one thing in history...what would it be?

I've already altered countless events throughout history, and I've learned that it can have dire consequences. It's not something to be taken lightly - the butterfly effect is real, and we need to be careful of how we treat the timeline. But that doesn't mean I don't have regrets...

How would you consider time traveling in style?

The TM - the time machine we use in the Montauk Project - rips your body apart as it sends you through time. You can feel yourself disintegrate, feel the pieces break away. Anything has to be better than that.

How would you describe your ideal woman?

Someone who has passion, who sees life as an opportunity instead of a burden. Someone who cares about the people around her. All I've ever wanted is to feel that kind of love from someone else.

What was your first impression of Lydia?

She was headstrong and stubborn. She wouldn't listen to me and she put her family before her own safety. I'd never met anyone like her before.

If you could have three wishes, what would you wish for?

I only have one wish - to be free of the Montauk Project. But they control everything I do, and sometimes it's harder to break away mentally than it is physically.

Any message to our dear readers?

Be grateful for your freedom, and try not to judge my actions too harshly. You can't know how consuming the Montauk Project is until you experience it.

Any message to Lydia?

I want Lydia to know that there are reasons for my actions. I'm not great at expressing myself - when you have no freedom, you learn to hide your emotions in order to survive. It's not easy to unlearn that, but I'm trying.

Thank you so much, Wes! Can you give me a hug? No? Lydia might get jealous? Okay. I love Lydia, I wouldn't want to be the cause of any rifts. If you aren't familiar with Wes and Lydia and the whole Montauk Project, check out the blurbs to So Close to You and This Strange and Familiar Place below!

So Close to You (So Close to You, #1)

Author: Rachel Carter

Date of Publication: July 10, 2012

Rachel Carter launches a mind-blowing time-travel trilogy with her YA novel So Close to You.

Lydia Bentley doesn’t believe the rumors about the Montauk Project, that there’s some sort of government conspiracy involving people vanishing and tortured children. But her grandfather is sure that the Project is behind his father’s disappearance more than sixty years earlier.

While helping her grandfather search Camp Hero, a seemingly abandoned military base on Long Island, for information about the disappearance, Lydia is transported back to 1944—just a few days before her great-grandfather’s disappearance.

Lydia begins to unravel the dark secrets of the Montauk Project and her own family history, despite warnings from Wes, a mysterious boy she is powerfully attracted to but not sure she should trust.

These are the things of which Lydia is now certain:

The Montauk Project has been experimenting with time travel for years.

The Project's subjects are "recruits" from across time, recruits like Wes, Lydia's ally, friend, and love.

The Project is now responsible for the disappearance of two members of her family...

The conspiracy theorists were right about the Montauk Project all along. In this sequel to So Close to You, they're coming for Lydia next...

About Rachel Carter

I'm a 27-year-old writer, an avid reader, and a lover of all things pop culture. (One of my life goals is to write for Entertainment Weekly!) I grew up in a log cabin in Vermont, surrounded by trees and chickens. I learned how to ski when I was six, I could start a bonfire in my sleep and my dad makes maple syrup every spring.

I've always loved to read - I spent most of my childhood with my nose in a book. Even now, I read about a book a week and I'm ALWAYS looking for recommendations (send me yours on twitter or facebook). Romance and YA are my genres of choice, though I also love Fantasy, History, and Science Fiction. And, for some reason, epic romances set in communist Russia.

I attended the University of Vermont, where I majored in English and Women's Studies. I moved to NYC right after college, and received my MFA from Columbia University. I recently moved back to Vermont, where I'm working on my next series. Read more about my life and other random thoughts on my blog!

My palms are sweating, and my heart literally feels like it’s going to beat it’s way out of my chest. I decide that I may vomit before the night is over, but hopefully it won’t be on myself or Ty. I run my hand over the bannister was I walk down the stairs. I keep in there incase I trip, which is very possible. I try to focus on the steps and not on the fact that I’m about to go out of my first date.

Gah. I hate that word. Date. It’s too gray. I like black and white. Nothing about this night is black or white.

I count the steps as I walk down. There are exactly 32 steps from the top floor to the bottom floor. When I get to the bottom, I am forced to look up at Ty. He looks good. Really good. Dammit. He doesn’t look nervous at all. In fact he looks completely cool. Of course he’s cool. He’s probably been out on like a million dates before. Why should he be nervous?

I am relieved to see that he’s wearing jeans and a concert shirt. I didn’t underdress or overdress, and I’m glad I decided to wear jeans. I’m going to ask Toby’s advice more often.

“You look beautiful,” he says, and then hands me a bouquet of purple flowers.

Flowers = date, right?

Ugh, why does this suddenly feel awkward?

I take them from him. I have no idea what kind of flowers they are. I feel like I should know, but it’s not like I frequently get flowers from guys. “Thank you. They are beautiful.”

What am I supposed to do with the flowers? Am I supposed to take them with us? Or am I supposed to leave them here? There should a Dating for Dummies book that covers this. Maybe there is. Memo to self - look it up. I will be more prepared next time.

Next time? Calm down, Kihanna, I tell myself. Let’s get through tonight before we start thinking about a second date.

About Mercy Amare

I am a YA/ NA author, with an addiction to NOS & Red Bull energy drinks. My guilty pleasure is the TV series The Lying Game and The Vampire Diaries. I'm 23 years old. I currently live in St Louis, with my husband of 2 years.

Christian looks at me. I wait for a smart-aleck reply or a smile but get neither. Just his blue eyes sucking me in like a whirlpool. “That’s what I thought you would say. So you just have to keep fighting for it. Keep fighting to get it back.”

My eyes won’t leave his and his won’t leave mine. And he’s cute. God, he’s so cute, I just want to focus on his cuteness. I want that to be all that matters. When his hand comes up and cups my cheek, I gasp. He brushes his thumb under my eye and licks his lips and I’m frozen and on fire and close to having a heart attack and anxious all at the same time.

Slowly, he leans forward and I know he’s giving me time. And my heart is leaping and I want to feel his lips. This is Christian. The boy who asked me to dance. The boy I ran to my mom about and told her that I loved. And now he’s my friend. The first person who has made me feel normal since everything happened.

But I’m so scared. Scared of messing it up. Scared he’ll decide he doesn’t want me. Scared of losing him. Of getting hurt.

He gets closer and I smell his sweet, sugary scent. See his mouth and wet lips and that hair I want to touch.

See the one person besides Emery who I have. The one person I can’t lose. “Wait,” I say and Christian stops moving. He’s still close. So very, very close that his lips are only an inch away from mine. “I’m scared,” I admit.

“I won’t hurt you.”

And I swear a part of me believes him. Maybe all of me. But how do I know if that’s the right decision or not?

He runs his hand down my face and touches my hair. Love that he’s not nervous to do it the way I am with him and I watch his fingers, brown against my red hair.

“Go out with me, Bryntastic. Let’s go do something this weekend. Don’t keep running. I won’t even try to kiss you again unless you tell me to. Or I’ll wait for you to do it. Just let go. Live.”

His words are what I want. I want them so badly and they sound so perfect that it’s hard not to just scream, “Yes!” right now. “Why?” I ask him. “Why are you so nice to me?”

I love his strength. Love that he doesn’t even hesitates before saying, “Because you were my first crush. Because I used to watch you conqueror anything and used to listen to you laugh with your friends. You were happy and I loved your smile. Because I had to work up the courage to ask you to dance and I did, and then I left and the one thing I missed was that smile. I watched my sister lose hers and watched my family fall apart and when I came back here? I wanted to see your smile again. Because you’re beautiful when you smile and you’ve lost it now. I want you to conquer this because what the hell is the purpose in it all if the first girl I ever danced with loses her smile?”

I don’t realize I’m crying until Christian wipes my tears. “You think I’m beautiful?”

About Nyrae Dawn

Writing has always been Nyrae Dawn’s passion. There have been times in her life where she wasn’t able to chase that dream the way she desired, but she always found her way back to telling stories.

One of her loves has always been writing about teens. There’s something so fresh and fun about the age that she loves exploring. Her husband says it’s because she doesn’t want to grow up. She doesn’t think that’s such a bad thing and luckily for her, he doesn’t either.

Nyrae gravitates toward character-driven stories. She loves going on emotional journeys with characters whether it be reading or writing. And yes, she’s a total romantic at heart and proud.

{Radical Read-Along} Team Wars Challenge + Giveaway: Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Sunday, July 28, 2013

Music Plus Books

The time has come for me to host the Team Wars Challenge! What is this challenge, you say? By today, you should have read until Chapter 13 of Unearthly. And we've already met both love interests, Christian and Tucker. So this challenge is really simple. Just write a post on which team are you on and defend it! Here are some examples:

"Team Christian! I mean, HELLO, a Christian for an angel like Clara! Isn't that obvious enough?"

"Team Tucker! I love me some truck-driving, twinsies with my new best friend, ski instructor and HEY, I just love Tucker and enjoy how he teases Clara!"

As for me, I don't want to say here which team I am on so you won't be swayed or whatever. I said it though on my review before. And I'm Team Jeffrey now so it doesn't matter. Haha!

You can be as animated as you want (Use GIFs! Make a video! Anything!) or you can make a poem expressing your undying love and loyalty to your team or a simple explanation via a paragraph. Anything's great! I would LOVE to read why you're on your team. Plus, at the end of this read-along, I want YOU to come back here and say if you changed teams or not. Just a comment would be enough.

Now, once your post is up and about, link it here!

And of course, if you posted for my challenge (I love you!), you're in for a prize! Can't wait to read Hallowed? You can win an ecopy here!

Interview

How did you come up with the idea for Bittersweet Junction?

I’ve had several ideas for stories that revolve around the idea of a five year high school reunion. The idea for Bittersweet Junction started there, although in the end, there is no actual high school reunion in the book. That wouldn’t have been a good enough reason to drag Julia back to Benton Hill.

If Bittersweet Junction were made into a movie, who would you want to play the main characters?

I’ve thought a lot about this. I could see Emma Roberts playing Julia and Chris Pine, with his gorgeous blue eyes, would make the perfect Ben. Emily Browning would play Julia’s little sister Clary, and Max Thieriot would round out the casting as Mike.

When did you begin writing?

I started writing the summer between sixth and seventh grade. I kept all of my teenage angst in a journal and experimented with poetry as well. I think that helped me start finding my writing voice.

When did you first think, wow I have made it as a writer?

My senior year of high school I won a state newspaper award for a piece of hard hitting journalism in the school paper. It was an article on how a teacher in a local junior high had gotten in trouble for showing an R-rated movie in the classroom. The day I received my award, I knew that writing was part of my life’s journey.

Do you have any special rituals you do when you sit down to write?

I usually have an idea of how many words or chapters that I want to get written that particular writing session. It helps to have a goal because I am easily distracted.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers out there?

Take an active interest in reading about what’s going on in the publishing industry today so that you can make informed decisions about your writing destiny. The landscape of publishing is changing faster than anyone could have imagined, and it affects all of us.

I began writing young, with a diary followed by an interest in English. My first experience with publication came when I placed third in a Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge contest while I was in the Air Force, but my dedication to writing came after I had my youngest child, now a teen getting ready to enter his senior year of high school. My husband, son, and I live in Northwest Georgia where I now spend my days creating stories about life in the south, and far beyond. More than a dozen of my short stories have appeared in several magazines. Five anthologies feature other short stories, and my teen novel, Softly Say Goodbye, released last year.
