Becoming More
Title: Becoming More
Author: Bayli Lane
Date of Publication: August 11, 2013
Genre: contemporary NA romance

At first it was all freedom, fun, and games for Lilly Fairfield. Being a freshman in college was supposed to create some of the best memories of her life, especially with her best friend, Lauren, and longtime boyfriend, Sander, by her side.

But the excitement begins to slip away when the people closest to her start to change. They begin moving in a direction Lilly doesn’t want to go, forcing Lilly to be faced with a decision. Should she fight for her relationships with both Sander and Lauren or move on to something different? Something unknown. Someone like…

Colton Davenport. Colton isn’t Lilly’s typical type. He's shockingly sexy with his colorful tattoos, shiny silver lip ring, and ear gauges. His smile alone leaves her breathless. Then again, she hasn’t had a specific type other than Sander. When she meets Colton she feels an automatic attraction that stuns her into utter stillness. She can’t look away, doesn’t want to look away.

Lilly must decide between a life with Sander, a life she always thought she wanted, and an unknown path with Colton.

Will Lilly make the right choices for her future, Becoming More?

Review

My Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Thank you to Jennifer of Love Between the Sheets and Bayli Lane for the review copy. This in no way affected my views of the novel.

I want to start this review with a disclaimer that I think many people would enjoy this novel, especially the hardcore contemporary NA romance fans. However, I am not a hardcore fan and I do think I've read too many contemporary NA romances that I'm getting tired of the repetitive tropes. That is to say, yes, Becoming More is a cliche-trodden read. To give credit to the author, the writing was executed well. However, I predicted ALL of the plot points and not only that, but our characters were so stereotypical. Like I always say in my reviews of novels with predictable and familiar plots, I don't mind cliches. But you must bring something new to the table.

So, that was my main issue with this novel. Sadly and I admit, that this clouded my enjoyment of the book. With me having predicted the trajectory of the story and even exact twists and scenes, I had nothing which made me want to keep on reading. Still, I plowed through this novel. What I enjoyed the most in this novel was Lilly's friendship with Clarissa, Colton's friend. Clarissa's the type of friend everyone must have. She can be brutally honest, call you out on whatever you do, while still putting your welfare first and being endearing.

As for Lilly's burgeoning romance with Colton, I wasn't all that happy with how it progressed. Sure, Sander's changing to a jerk, but I still believe she shouldn't have flirted with Colton when she's still with Sander. Same with Colton. Dude, back the hell off. (But good thing he did make a move because Sander's a dick. But what if he wasn't?) Anyway, I just have an issue with cheating and/or flirting while the character is still in a relationship. I mean, you do know you're flirting and then you tell yourself, "no, we're just friends". Oh yeah right. I do believe a platonic relationship between a girl and a guy is possible (When Harry Met Sally!) but hey, it's so obvious in here that THAT isn't a platonic relationship.

Lastly, Lauren's a bitch. Hate her.

One last point! I think there was a chance of me giving this book 3 stars. However, at the end, the several time lapses during the epilogue turned me off. Authors, you need not wrap up everything in tiny cute bows. Sure, payback's such sweet revenge but to do "three weeks later", "two months later" and "nine months later", that's not cool. Oh well.

Becoming More is a contemporary NA romance read I'd recommend for hardcore fans and to those whose guilty reading pleasure are bad does-not-do-relationship boys.

About Bayli Lane

Bayli Lane didn’t realize how much she loved creating a world from nothing until college. She went to Marian University where she majored in Communications but in her spare time wrote and read. Her love for reading is what really brought out her desire to create her own novel. After starting loads of stories and not finishing them, she finally decided it was time to put her passion to work. Becoming More is her first novel but certainly not her last. Bayli lives with her husband, Tim, in Indiana where she is probably sitting with a large cup of coffee and her computer working on her next book.
