Review + Dream Movie Cast + Giveaway: The Distance Between Us by Kasie West

Saturday, August 17, 2013

Kasie West is the best and because she's the best, I have her dream movie cast for The Distance Between Us! Remember when I featured her dream movie cast for Pivot Point before? As with Pivot Point, I also have a giveaway! Stick around for my glowing review, hot young actors and the international giveaway!

The Distance Between Us
Title: The Distance Between Us
Author: Kasie West
Publisher: Harper Teen
Date of Publication: July 2, 2013

Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.

So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she's beginning to enjoy his company.

She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.

Review

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Thank you so much to Sarah of HarperCollins for the review copy! Still, this in no way affected my opinions of the novel.

I loved Kasie's Pivot Point and ever since I heard she has another novel coming out, I've been drooling for it. It's a contemporary YA romance novel and I thought, oh my, Pivot Point was only her debut novel, how awesome can The Distance Between Us be? Then people who loved Pivot Point told me they even enjoyed and loved The Distance Between Us more. Yes, I'm looking at you, Lenore Appelhans. HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? Pivot Point was THE BOMB and this is even more engaging? It's been getting so many raves so I grabbed the chance to review it. I was a goner right at the first page.

I can't remember the last novel or even movie where I laughed this much. No, I didn't just laugh at this one. I rolled in our couch, howling with laughter. If I'm not having stitches laughing, I'm chuckling or grinning. My gut and face got a workout with this novel. And that's all thanks to Caymen Meyers, our HILARIOUS heroine. Caymen will have Emma Stone run for her money and her fanbase. I haven't met a person, fictional or real, this sarcastic and witty. I mean, seriously. Caymen trumps everyone in the dry humor category. Dry humor is the best! The way she deadpans and how she rattles everyone with her humor, GOLD. Simply gold.

Below is an excerpt from what I emailed Kasie right after I read TDBU:
I was squealing so much from all the giddiness and laughing so much because of Caymen's sarcasm. I'm the person who thinks dry humor is the best humor. Maybe that's why I kinda love British sitcoms. Haha! But deadpanning is a highly sought out skill or talent I really love. I had a blast reading Leila in Pivot Point but Caymen is even more fun! I really had a blast. She's so damn hilarious and I just love her so much!
So if you think my review makes me sound like a total spazz, this is me toned down. This is me almost a month after I read it.

Aside from being too-funny-I-want-a-Caymen-sarcastic-joke-pill, she's totally relatable. You do get why she's like what she's like and how too pragmatic she became. Though I want to swipe that notion of hers that rich people are snobs, I can't fault her and her mom because usually, it's true. And it's easier to generalize them all and apply a rule to everyone than be burned again and again.

But let's be honest here. I laughed until I can't anymore because of Caymen but Xander, oh Xander. I have lots of book boyfriends but there are only two fictional characters who I want to name my future hypothetical sons after. The first is Don Vito Corleone of Mario Puzo's The Godfather because heck, WHO IS AS AWESOME AS THE DON? The second one is Dean Holder from Hopeless by Colleen Hoover because DEAN HOLDER IS PERFECT. But now, I need a third hypothetical son to name Alexander, with Xander as his nickname.

That is how much I love and how high up there Xander is. So why do I love Xander? He's really really REALLY REALLY sweet. Absolutely, utterly sweet. He does the sweetest things and says the sweetest lines and I'm just a puddle of goo under his mercy. And he keeps up with Caymen. He's not a snob and he's more mature than he thinks he is. He's a good sport, he's fun, I LOVE HIM. I'm sure you will too. Here's my Goodreads review right after I read TDBU:
I WILL NAME MY THIRD HYPOTHETICAL SON ALEXANDER YES I LOVE XANDER SO MUCH AND YES I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH
I told you, I love this so much it's not healthy. Aside from these two characters, I love all of the characters as well. Caymen and her best friend Skye were perfect for each other. I enjoyed reading a friendship that's so real and that's so enviable. The side characters were enjoyable as well and they even got a sigh of swoon from me. However, the issue brought up the most about this book is how everything was wrapped up too nicely and too fast at the end. How everything seem just so convenient. Sure, I admit that but once again, I. DO. NOT. CARE. Why do you read romance stories? Do you read it for the journey the characters went through, their dance towards love and for their happily-ever-after or happily-for-now? If yes, then you won't care as well with how The Distance Between Us wraps up everything. <3

I don't know how to blurb The Distance Between Us because I just want to shout at the top of my lungs that YOU HAVE TO READ THIS. YOU NEED TO READ THIS. If you want to laugh so hard you'll snort your drink out of your nose (true story for me, I should have known better than to drink and read) and to swoon so hard you'll be sighing and wishing you have a Xander of your own who will dig graves with you and bring you hot chocolate every morning, YOU HAVE TO READ THIS. For all contemporary YA romance fans, YOU HAVE TO READ THIS. I can't stress it enough. YOU. HAVE. TO. READ. THIS.

Honestly, the first thing that interested me was the cover...also, I'm trying to read more contemporary Ya and NAm since I just read some great books in that genre and I used to avoid it. So, basically, it's like a brand new genre for me to explore >.<

Great review! Thanks for the giveaway!
