Why did I ever stop reading adult contemporary romances? Whyyyy??? But thanks to Rachel Harris, I think I'm going back~ Today, I have a pretty packed post for the Taste the Heat blog tour! I have my review, a guest post from Rachel about her favorite adult romance authors and a giveaway! So come and join the heat!

Taste the Heat (Love and Games, #1)
Title: Taste the Heat (Love and Games #1)
Author: Rachel Harris
Publisher: Entangled Bliss
Date of Publication: July 8, 2013
Genre: contemporary adult romance

One sexy fire captain. One Cajun chef, One combustible kitchen…

When chef Colby Robicheaux returned home to New Orleans to save her family restaurant, the last person she expected to reconnect with was her brother’s best friend and her childhood crush. As tempting as a sugar-coated beignet, Jason is one dish she doesn’t want to taste. Colby is counting down the days till she can leave the place where her distrust of love and commitment originated and go back to Vegas.

Fire captain Jason Landry isn’t looking for love, either. He knows he should focus on finding the perfect mother for his daughter, but when he first sees Colby, all grown up and gorgeous, he can’t help but be drawn to her. And when she suggests a no-strings-attached fling, Jason doesn’t want to say no.

As their relationship grows more intense, Colby finds that Jason isn’t as easy to leave behind as she thought. Could turning up the heat on something real be worth the possibility of getting burned?

Review

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Thank you to Kelly of InkSlinger PR and to Rachel Harris for the review copy! Still, only honest opinions in this side of the web!

I don't even know why I stopped reading adult romances. Well, I didn't really stop but ever since I became a blogger, all I've been reading are young adult novels and recently, new adult ones. I've been dodging adult romances like a bullet. Maybe because I focused on reading YA since that's what I want to read and blog about but I think I also had a notion that "meh, another happily ever after". WHY DID I EVER? There's a reason why HEAs are guilty pleasure reads! Because they seriously put a smile on your face and make your heart pitter-patter. So thank you, Rachel, for awakening adult romance fan in me!

The top three romance set-ups or tropes I love are:
1) bickering and bantering to loving
2) best friends turning to more
3) younger sister crushing on older brother's best friend

And Taste the Heat falls on the third category! I just love that set-up because there are lots of fun conversations and scenes that can arise from that. Obviously, the older brother will be overprotective of his little sister and the best friend will be so wary of his feelings because he'll be breaking the bro code by going for his best friend's sister. But I just devour romances like this because maybe I secretly wish I had an older brother to be protective for me. Okay, that's not a secret.

So right from the get-go, I know that I will enjoy this so much. Moreover, I love second chances at love and Captain Jason Landry truly deserves to love again having raised her daughter for five years after his first love and wife died while saving someone. And oh, did I say Jason is a FIREFIGHTER? AND A GREAT COOK AT THAT? AND A GREAT FATHER? I'm seriously a fan of how he brought up Emma and how great Emma turned out.

Not only Jason, mind you, but I love every single character in this novel. Colby, with her swearing off men and her schoolgirl crush with Jason that never abated. Cane, Colby's older brother and Jason's best friend, played the protective brother and cool godfather to Emma really well. Their younger sister and matchmaker extraordinaire Sherry was so fun as well! And Emma's blatant attempts to pair off her dad and Colby! Jason's parents and the whole town of Magnolia Springs were just wonderful too.

Considering most of the new adult novels recently, Taste the Heat is pretty clean. No graphic sex or anything so it's tame. But that doesn't mean it wasn't hot. Taste the Heat is sweet and hot and HILARIOUS. I seriously had fits laughing at a certain tampon scene. Curious? Read it! I think a clueless father dealing with tampons is definitely a funny scene. Aside from being a fun, quick and sweet read, Taste the Heat also immersed me in the world of Cajun food and to New Orleans. I have no clue about New Orleans aside from Bourbon Street and Mardi Gras so reading Taste the Heat was a learning experience as well.

With a romance as sweet as sugar-coated beignets and as hot as Cajun food, Taste the Heat is a story of taking second chances and loving again. I recommend it to all adult romance lovers and fans of happily-ever-afters!

Guest Post

I’m a bookaholic. I’m not ashamed to admit it. When I’m not writing, and I’m not homeschooling my daughters, you can pretty much assume my nose is in a book. I love being swept up in a different world, experiencing life alongside amazing characters. I love laughing and crying and cheering for them. My bookshelves are exploding and my e-reader is stuffed, but that’s what makes me happy.

So, when I got this post and it said Top Five Favorite Authors, I panicked. I couldn’t just pick five favorite authors total! There are so many amazing authors who have impacted and influenced my writing, who inspire me and fill me with warm fuzzies. So, I changed it (he he he). I’m going with my top five favorite adult romance authors since this tour is for my own adult romance, and at least this way I can narrow it down a bit, although it was still really hard. See, bookaholic (*grin*). But here it is, my almost solid list of the top five adult romance authors who knock my socks off.

Rachel Harris’s Top Five Favorite Adult Romance Authors

1. Kristan Higgins. This girl knows how to bring the funny with the heat. I fall for each and every one of her characters. They live and breathe on the page, they are relatable and fun, and I can’t help but cheer as they earn their happily ever afters. Her books always leave me with a happy reader sigh.

2. Jill Shalvis. Another girl who brings the funny with her romance. She knows how to make some alpha men, let me tell you, but they also have vulnerability and heart, and make me swoon! Her women are strong but real, I can see myself being friends with all of them. It’s no wonder these two authors are good friends because their writing hits me the exact same way. Two of my favorite authors EVER.

3. Jude Deveraux. Uh, speaking of favorite author ever?? Yeah, I met Ms. Jude Deveraux at the Romantic Times Conference this year, and I totally slobbered all over her. I’m not ashamed to admit I fangirled hardcore, and I’d do it again. She’s written so many amazing books I can’t even begin to list them all, but each of them come alive for the readers. Authentic characters, rich settings, fabulous dialogue. You can’t ask for more than that.

4. Lisa Kleypas. I’ve mostly inhaled all of her historical romances (and when I say inhale, I mean devour them in one sitting, then go back and reread to savor again and again), but this dynamo also brings the heat with her contemporary romances, too. She’s brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Whenever I meet a reader who says they’re leery of historical romances, I pretty much force them to read this girl, in particular her Hathaway series. She’s that good. They are that good. Trust me. Another happy reader sigh just thinking of them.

5. Sarah MacLean/ Rachel Gibson. Even making this just a two-way tie was difficult, but I knew I couldn’t leave either of these ladies off my list. Sarah is another historical romance author I make everyone read (I’ve devoured every book she’s written and loved them all), and Rachel is another one who brings the humor and heat to each of her contemporary romances. Highly recommend these two.

There you have it. My top five (ahem, six) favorite adult romance authors of all time. There were at least six other adult authors who came sooo close to making this list (and if I had to mention my favorite adult or new adult authors, too, well, we’d be here all day), but I’m happy with the above.

What about YOU, dear lovely readers? Who are YOUR favorite authors??

About Rachel Harris

Rachel Harris grew up in New Orleans, where she watched soap operas with her grandmother and stayed up late sneak reading her mama’s favorite romance novels. Now a Cajun cowgirl living in Houston, she still stays up way too late reading her favorite romances, only now, she can do so openly. She firmly believes life’s problems can be solved with a hot, powdered-sugar-coated beignet or a thick slice of king cake, and that screaming at strangers for cheap, plastic beads is acceptable behavior in certain situations.

When not typing furiously or flipping pages in an enthralling romance, she homeschools her two beautiful girls and watches reality television with her amazing husband. Taste The Heat is her adult romance debut. She’s the author of MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY and A TALE OF TWO CENTURIES. She loves hearing from readers! Find her at www.RachelHarrisWrites.com.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! Well, that's another reason I want an older brother! I have a younger one as well and that's why I am also iffy with romances where the girl goes for her best friend's younger brother. Just no. Because I have a younger brother and I just can't picture that. Yes, I have double standards. Haha! Thanks for dropping by!
