One of my most anticipated books of 2013 is finally here! Eeeepp! Without further ado, here's Tellulah Darling's second book, My Ex From Hell, the first book in The Blooming Goddess Trilogy!

My Ex From Hell (The Blooming Goddess Trilogy, #1)
Title: My Ex From Hell (The Blooming Goddess Trilogy #1)
Author: Tellulah Darling
Publisher: Te Da Media
Date of Publication: April 1, 2013

Sixteen-year-old Sophie Bloom wishes she’d been taught the following:

a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.)
b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.

Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy yoga girls, and being on probation at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.

Literally.

This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.

Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.

Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …

… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.

My Ex From Hell is a romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Romeo and Juliet had it easy.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Finally! At last! My Ex From Hell is now available! Ever since I read and frickin' enjoyed Tellulah Darling's Sam Cruz's Infallible Guide to Getting Girls (review), I've been waiting for this baby as if it's my own. There was an excerpt of the first chapter of My Ex From Hell in Sam Cruz and as I pretty much worshipped Tellulah's snappy and witty dialogue, I've been salivating for My Ex From Hell. So when I saw it in NetGalley, I didn't hesitate and requested it immediately. It was 3AM when my request got accepted and I screamed in delight. Yes, even though it was 3AM. And yes, I was reprimanded by my parents. I don't care, MY EX FROM HELL! So you can feel how high my expectations are for this novel. I'm glad to report I was not disappointed!

Tellulah's trademark snappy and witty dialogue is still evident in My Ex From Hell. I feel like I'm watching a sitcom from all the snark and sarcasm and I love every second of it. But it's not all fun and games as the plot and reveal are convoluted enough to make you think what really happened to Sophie. Their adventures were also exciting and wonderful to read. I love how Tellulah established the Greek mythology differently from what we commonly know. For example, Kai, who is Hades' son, is Persephone's love interest. Even though Tellulah changed that bit, the story was still rich and realistic (relative to its world) on its own that you can actually see this. I actually want this to be a movie! I love the mythology on this.

The characters were all lovable. Sophie and Hannah's friendship was kickass and so enviable. Theo as the mysterious friend was loads of fun to read too. I also love all the meta and how aware the characters are that they don't make sense or that they're doing something stupid. They all sound like normal people and that's what makes this all the more relatable. Teen speak!

I'm foreseeing a bit of a problem though because I dig Theo HARD. I love him. Which makes me want to ship him with Sophie even though I know that's never gonna happen. Can I have a Theo of my own? Sarcastic but eternally kind and selfless and a NERD, I am Team Theo. Sure, Kai is HOT but come on, I've always loved the beta heroes.

Not only is Darling's dialogue snappy, her action scenes are bam-bam-bam as well! One moment Sophie and the gang are dangling mid-air and the next thing you know, Sophie's battling a dragon. It's just so action-packed that you'll be breezing through the pages.

So as a first book in a series, it did its job well in establishing the world of The Blooming Goddess. I cannot wait to read the next book! I already miss the gang and I wanna read more of Sophie's journey. I recommend this to all YA lovers, especially those into Greek mythology or Greek-inspired stories.

Go read it now!

About Tellulah Darling

Tellulah Darling
noun

1. YA Novelist
2. Alter ego of former screenwriter and instructor
3. Sassy minx

Geeks out over: cool tech.
Squees for: great storytelling.
Delights in: fabulous conversation.
Writes about: where love meets comedy, flavored with pop culture. Awkwardness ensues.

In the geek vs nerd breakdown, I fall on the geek side of things. I think nerds are slightly smarter but I have better social skills. Plus I know my library card number by heart. Although not sure where that takes the argument.

When not zoning out – I mean writing, I make it up to my family for the lack of attention by showering them with chocolate chip cookies. And dancing in my kitchen. Tap shoes optional. Again, not sure where that takes the argument.

    3. I know, it's just so good. Guilty-pleasure good but I don't feel any ounce of guilt because it's objectively good too. Glad I have a waiting buddy for My Date From Hell. Let's suffer in waiting together.

  4. Well... this is completely different than I thought it was. Never judge a book by title alone, should be added to the rule of never judge a book by its cover. Now that I have actually read the synopsis (and your wonderful review), I realize my mistake and plan to rectify it ASAP. Like, heading to library sites, then Amazon if necessary.
