{Blog Tour} Review + Dream Movie Cast: Zenn Scarlett by Christian Schoon

Friday, April 26, 2013

Thank you to Amanda of Strange Chemistry for the opportunity to join the Zenn Scarlett tour and to Christian Schoon for writing this novel and sharing his dream movie cast. This book has caught my eye ever since the cover was revealed and so, I jumped on the chance of being in its blog tour. Eep! Come read my thoughts and share a thought or two!

Zenn Scarlett
Title: Zenn Scarlett
Author: Christian Schoon
Publisher: Strange Chemistry
Date of Publication: May 7, 2013

When you're studying to be exoveterinarian specializing in exotic, alien life forms, school... is a different kind of animal.

Zenn Scarlett is a resourceful, determined 17-year-old girl working hard to make it through her novice year of exovet training. That means she's learning to care for alien creatures that are mostly large, generally dangerous and profoundly fascinating. Zenn’s all-important end-of-term tests at the Ciscan Cloister Exovet Clinic on Mars are coming up, and, she's feeling confident of acing the exams. But when a series of inexplicable animal escapes and other disturbing events hit the school, Zenn finds herself being blamed for the problems. As if this isn't enough to deal with, her absent father has abruptly stopped communicating with her; Liam Tucker, a local towner boy, is acting unusually, annoyingly friendly; and, strangest of all: Zenn is worried she's started sharing the thoughts of the creatures around her. Which is impossible, of course. Nonetheless, she can't deny what she's feeling.

Now, with the help of Liam and Hamish, an eight-foot sentient insectoid also training at the clinic, Zenn must learn what's happened to her father, solve the mystery of who, if anyone, is sabotaging the cloister, and determine if she's actually sensing the consciousness of her alien patients... or just losing her mind. All without failing her novice year....

Review

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Admittedly, this is my first ever space novel. And I... love it! I don't know if it's just me but it was fresh and exciting. Really sorry if this will be a short review as I'm graduating tomorrow and I'm so crunched for time. But all I can say is, I will definitely read more from Christian Schoon.

I first came across this novel via the Strange Chemistry newsletter. The cover blew me away and then partnered with that blurb, I knew I had to read it. So I'm so thankful to Amanda for this chance to read a wonderful novel. It started slow but I didn't mind it because the author was building its setting. The exo-veterinary clinics and all that stuff were amazing. I had a blast picturing it all and thanks to Christian's dream movie cast, my reading was definitely more enjoyable and visual. After the slow world-building, the plot got thicker and more exciting so all is well.

I love the characters, they were so fun to read and dissect. Zenn is that smart girl who's not boy-obsessed which is truly a breath of fresh air. Everything about this novel seemed fresh to me and I just love it for that.

I recommend this for animal lovers, space lovers and just anyone who thinks the blurb sounds interesting and unique, BECAUSE IT IS! :)

Dream Movie Cast

Like any author, I have great fun trying to come up with the ideal cast of Oscar®-caliber thespic talent for the massively budgeted 3D cinematic spectacular that will catapult my book’s epic setting and unforgettable characters onto a mile-high Ultra-Imax Mega-Screen. And the fact is, I change my mind about the optimal casting formula all the time. But, here’s the latest list I’ll be emailing to whoever is lucky enough to sit in the director’s chair for Zenn Scarlett: The Movie

Zenn Scarlett: Dakota Fanning (w/ Elle as young Zenn in the prologue….) With minimal make-up, she could pull off the fresh-faced, farm-girl-with-smarts look that Zenn needs

Liam Tucker: Devon Gearhart   Zenn could go for that

Otha Scarlett:  Jeff Bridges  Gruff but w/ a sensitive side

Warra Scarlett: Bradley Cooper   Dad-like

Mai Scarlett: Lucy Liu   Mom-ish

Sister Hild: Cate Blanchett   A little spooky

Hamish (Voiced by): Jude Law    Just seems like he could voice a giant, good-natured bug

Graad Dokes: Javier Bardem  A hard, bitter guy

Vic LeClerc: Tilda Swinton   Also hard, but smooth

About Christian Schoon

Born in the American Midwest, Christian started his writing career in earnest as an in-house writer at the Walt Disney Company in Burbank, California. He then became a freelance writer working for various film, home video and animation studios in Los Angeles. After moving from LA to a farmstead in Iowa several years ago, he continues to freelance and also now helps re-hab wildlife and foster abused/neglected horses.  He acquired his amateur-vet knowledge, and much of his inspiration for the Zenn Scarlett series of novels, as he learned about - and received an education from - these remarkable animals and the awesome veterinarians who care so deeply for them.
