On the evening of Sofia Claremont's seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.

A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.

She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.

An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.

Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.

Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.

Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?

My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I have a confession to make: I don't really get the whole vampire thing. Yes, send pitchforks my way but I just don't get the appeal of vampires. In fact, the only vampire-related I allow in my life or enjoy/like/love is the show adaptation of The Vampire Diaries. And nope, I haven't read the books. (I do love TVD and Damon so SO much.) So why did I agree to review this when I might be predisposed not to like it? Isn't that unfair? Because I want to like vampires. I feel like an outcast and so, I'd like to at least understand its appeal, if not to be completely under its spell. Moreover, Bella has been very lovely and understanding so I said yes to her review request. So here are the thoughts of a mermaids-and-angels-over-vampires-any-day kind of girl.

With the title and the author's name/pseudonym, I was kinda wary because I expected the novel to have tinges of Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey. I am happy to announce that that isn't the case! I didn't know that this was a short book so I was surprised at how fast everything went by. Even though it's a novella, the characterization was complete although they were stock characters. I liked all of the characters though, even the evil brother as he's delightfully hateful. He's so bad and I love him. Haha! The shortness of the book did not get in the way of establishing the world where it was set. I got a complete feel of its setting. However, since it's short, the action of the characters moved fast too. It was a little bit of instalove but I like that Sofia and Derek fought against it at first and then when everything was fine, a wrench was put in their way. I didn't really feel threatened with Derek's brother but I do think he will let hell break loose in the sequel.

I do think I will read the sequel but I am not dying to read it. It was a quick, enjoyable read though. I recommend this for fans of the genre and to those wanting to binge on novellas and quick reads. The search for a vampire novel that I will fall head over heels is still on.

About Bella Forrest

I've been telling stories pretty much since I could talk. Instead of having my parents read me bed-time stories, I would prefer to share with them my own made up tales.

As I grew older, I developed a passion for the fantasy genre. I'm an incurable Potterhead.

My debut novel, A Shade of Vampire, was released on December 14, 2012. The book became a Number 1 Christmas Bestseller in Vampire Romance, Paranormal and Fantasy on Amazon.

By the way, this is an awards-free blog. I appreciate it though, really. :D
